Friday 5 – “Un_____able”

Late again! This one is really late… so I might skip posting for Saturday.

  1. What’s a movie you once liked but is now unwatchable? Honestly, most of the movies I loved, I still love. However, I will say that I struggled to watch Willow as an adult
  2. What’s a song you once liked but is now unlistenable? I went through a period where I listened to things like Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies. Happily, that period ended, and I’m not really into hardcore music like that anymore.
  3. What’s a book you once liked but is now unreadable? oh, this is tough. I’ve read so many books. And so few that I read more than once. Maybe Mute by Piers Anthony? Although, I’m not sure I really liked it the first time I read it, back in high school.
  4. What’s something you once found unbelievable but whose truth is now undeniable? It’s ok to fail. You aren’t going to have many successes in life without a lot of failures first. Few things that really matter succeed on the first try.
  5. What’s something you once found tasty but is now unpalatable? Hamburgers, meat in general. Becoming a vegetarian was one of the easiest hard things I’ve ever done.

Brought to you by Friday 5.

  1. I’ve heard from a lot of people who loved Piers Anthony in high school who have become disillusioned with books they once adored. I read the first Bio of a Space Tyrant book a couple of years ago (I always liked his SF better than his fantasy) and I found it pretty close to pornographic in its sexual cruelty. I mean not titillating about the sex: titillating about the cruelty. It hasn’t pushed me off the second book (which I’ve purchased but haven’t gotten to yet), but when I wrote my review, I swore that if things continue in these themes, I’m not going to bother finishing the series.

  2. I loved the Incarnations of Immortality, Apprentice Adept, and Xanth books. I guess I’m more on the fantasy side?

I read some of the Apprentice books recently, still good. I’m not sure I liked Mute when I read it. It, like you said, it was heavy on the sex, and if I recall, a bit cruel too. I think I enjoyed reading it just because I was in high school and flabbergasted that my mom bought it for me.

    • Incarnations of Immortality was amazing for the first two books and then pretty good for the next two, not good for the next one, and then terrible for the last two. It’s one of Anthony’s signatures: start a series great and then peter out — especially when he turns an intended quintet into a seven-parter.
